Yes, we do recommend using a juicer to participate in the 3-day juice fast position of in the 14-Day Cleanse. (We do not juice on the other 11 days of the cleanse.) If you don’t have a juicer, ask a friend if you can borrow one. OR, you can use a blender to make the juice recipes, and then strain the whole blended juices to remove the majority of the fiber. Some participants do this. However, our juice recipes have been calibrated for a juicer. So, the flavor profiles will vary, particularly with those recipes that contain assertive and pungent ingredients such as leafy greens and beets. We recommend purchasing some additional apple, cucumber, ginger, and lemon to tweak the flavors of your juices made in a blender.
While we recommend organic foods whenever possible (especially during a juice cleanse), you can absolutely participate in the 14-Day Cleanse using conventional produce. If you’re working with budget restrictions, or live in an area with limited accessibility to organic produce, a good approach is to refer to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) website, and using their Dirty Dozen Plus™ and Clean 15™ list to determine where to put the emphasis in choosing organic produce.
The 14-Day Cleanse is a live experience, and we all participate in the cleanses at the same time during two full weeks (14 days) starting on a Friday morning and ending on a Thursday evening. However, we start preparing our bodies for the cleanse the week before Day 1 of the program. And, our first live call is on the Wednesday (two days) before we start on the Friday. So, we recommend planning to spend 3 to 4 weeks on the program. To get the most benefits out of the cleanse, we recommend taking 1 to 2 weeks to prepare your body for juice fasting for the most comfortable experience. This means, using our clean eating recipes and gradually weaning yourself off caffeine and alcohol to minimize potential detox symptoms. (Going off caffeine and alcohol is just during the two-week cleanse period.)
To achieve better health, we need to cleanse our bodies actively. Critics and skeptics argue that nature designed our bodies to do this for themselves, continuously. True. But we’ve given nature no chance to prepare for and adjust to the myriad of changes we’ve wrought on our environments and brought about in our habits. A barrage of toxins comes at us non-stop from pollutants, processed foods and additives, stress, prescription drugs, insufficient exercise, sedentary occupations, and other sources. Since our bodies have not had time to evolve to stand up to this onslaught, they need help, even with the major organs of elimination—the liver, skin, intestinal tract, and kidneys—all on line and at work. By freeing our bodies from overloads of toxins and waste products we get these organs functioning as efficiently as they can. In addition to clearing toxicity, the body needs a rest from digestion. On average, the human body expends 50-70% of its daily energy ration on digesting food. When cleansing and fasting, we give our bodies a bit of R&R, a brief furlough from this non-stop labor, and our systems can devote a greater share of energy to detoxification, healing, and repair.
The 14-day cleanse includes 3 days of juice fasting on Days 8, 9, and 10 of the program. (We are eating both raw and cooked recipes on the other days of the cleanse.) After leading over 30,000 participants through juice fasts, we have found that juicing is a nice middle ground for the majority of people. Juicing is a well known practice, is not extreme, and is fun! Juice fasting allows a more gentle detox experience so that you can experience the benefits of fasting in a more comfortable way. The juice fast component of the cleanse has been strategically designed to deliver concentrated nutrients and enough calories to fuel your body and support the detox process. Juice fasting can be safe and effective practice (consult your doctor if you have a medical condition), and we’ve seen thousands of people experience its benefits. Our participants report simply feeling better, to improving a variety of health issues such as headaches, high blood pressure, blood sugar levels, sinus problems, skin conditions, and digestive discomfort. Many people also report better sleep, a tremendous increase in energy, improved digestion, greater mental clarity, fewer aches and pains, and more stabilized moods. Each seasonal cleanse (summer, fall, winter, spring) contains different recipes using seasonal produce. We recommend doing a cleanse every quarter at the change of each season to reset your body and reboot for the start of a new cycle. Eating in harmony with nature and in keeping with the seasons supports the body’s built-in health and cleansing processes. Foods harvested in the spring (asparagus and greens), promote detox after winter, while foods grown in the summer (berries, melon, and cucumber) help to cool the body and keep you hydrated. In the colder months, warming root vegetables help to strengthen and sustain your body. By eating local, seasonal produce, you support your body’s natural rhythms, as well as sourcing fresher, better-tasting food, and supporting your local farming communities.
Everybody is different. Factors like diet, age, gender, body size, muscle mass, genes, hormones, environment, drugs, and physical activity influence metabolism. How much weight you will lose on the 14-Day Cleanse will vary. But, weight loss is a common result of the cleanse. If you don’t have extra weight to lose, your body will naturally recalibrate after you finish the juice cleanse. We prefer to focus on gaining health and exploring new ideas, rather than on losing weight or giving up favorite foods. To gauge the effectiveness of your cleanse as it’s going forward, look for subtle shifts in your body, like more energy, deeper sleep, more regular digestion, clearer/softer skin, mental clarity. During a cleanse, some of the weight loss, about 2-4 lbs. is often water weight and colon matter that will return once you complete the cleanse. The typical average sustainable weight loss reported from participants is approximately 1/2 lb to 1 lb per day if you have extra weight to lose. So, many participants lose about 10 pounds (or more) during the cleanse.
We encourage all participants to move as much as possible to aid the detox process in the first week of the cleanse. However, as we move into the juice fast (the deepest part of the process) we recommend more gentle movement. Detoxification uses a lot of energy, and your body goes through quite a number of changes, so we recommend resting and sleeping as much as possible during Days 8 to 12. If you push yourself during the juice fast, you will take energy away from your body’s natural detox process and may hinder the benefits. Even if you maintain a regular workout routine, we advise against intense exercise. And, instead, we recommend more moderate movement such as walking, stretching, rebounding, and yoga to support the lymphatic system and aid better digestion and elimination. Take a break from running, cycling, lifting weights, or other strenuous activity during the cleanse. Allow extra time during the cleanse for rest, retreat, reflection and rejuvenation.

Although the meal plans are designed for one person, the portions are very generous, and most people have leftover food. Many participants share the extra food with their partner or children and we have received countless reports of children (even picky eaters who struggle to eat vegetables) loving the food and asking for the smoothies, soups, salads, and desserts again. Most participants continue making the recipes after the program.
We make suggestions for substitutions in most recipes. Because this is a live-guided experience you can ask us as many questions as you like before, during, and after the cleanse if you can't find a seasonal ingredient or cannot eat it. We can suggest alternatives specifically tailored to your situation.
The 14-day meal plan is dairy-free, egg-free, and gluten-free because plant-based foods support cleansing. So, for the two-week cleanse, we all eat a plant-based diet. However, the majority of our participants are omnivores looking to eat more vegetables and get inspiration and tools to incorporate more healthy habits into their lives. We find that even the most vegetable-phobic people who are feeling anxious about being vegan for two weeks are surprised at how satisfied and satiated they feel, and how much they enjoy the food.
We don’t believe in deprivation, so, our portions are intentionally generous. So, it is unlikely that you will be hungry. In fact, most people have leftovers that they share with family and friends. The only time that you may feel hungry is during the juice fast portion of the cleanse on Days 8, 9, and 10. However, most participants are surprised that they don’t feel hungry even on those days. If you do, make the broth and juice popsicles to snack on during those days, and also make herbal teas and drink water. If you have a large appetite and are concerned about hunger, consider doubling the juice recipes.
Each person’s cleanse is unique, and even an individual’s cleanses over time will vary, due to many factors in overall physical and mental health—emotions, stress, and toxicity levels. At any time during the cleanse, you may experience common detox symptoms such as headaches, body aches, or a huge variance in energy levels. Some participants feel strong and vibrant throughout the two weeks. Detox symptoms (as unwelcome as they can be) are a sign that your natural cleanse mechanisms are working, and that your body is systematically healing. If you do experience detox symptoms, resting and hydrating normally provides quick relief, and most symptoms generally disappear within 12 to 48 hours. We will support you through this process. Cleansing (clean eating, not juice fasting) is beneficial for almost everyone. However, while juice fasting is a safe and healthy practice for the majority of people, we do not recommend it for those with critical heart conditions, diabetes, or cancer (especially those actively undergoing oncology treatments). We are juice fasting for 3 of the 14 days of the program. Fasting is unsafe for pregnant or lactating women, too. And, juice fasting is not appropriate for children. You can participate in the cleanse and not choose to juice fast. You can eat repeat some of the raw and cooked meals should you wish to.
